Taken

Four years ago, Kelly’s dad disappeared, apparently having taken his own life. His family are left devastated and are only just beginning to move on.

Then, one day, Kelly thinks she sees him again. It’s only a glimpse – and it can’t have been him can it? – but it is enough to bring back all the painful memories.

What was so terrible that he couldn’t go on?

The thoughts won’t leave her alone. Kelly confides in her friend Jack, and as they try to find out more about her dad’s past they are sucked into a murky world where nothing is as it seems.  Someone is trying to stop them finding out more and they are in real danger.

Who is following them? Who can they trust? And why does Gran refuse to talk about Dad?

I was looking for a book for a 12+ girl and discovered ‘Taken’. I think it would be enjoyed by boys as well. Thinking that as an adult I’d just flick through it, I found myself reading the whole thing in a couple of days! It has all the ingredients that interest young people including intrigue, adventure, complex relationships and coming to terms with the ups and downs of growing-up. I kept wondering how the writer was going to end the story as it could so easily have been a let-down, but like the rest of the book, it was measured and believable. I thoroughly recommend it.
